What is Superfood?
“Superfood” is a term now generally used to describe foods high in phytonutrient content that many people believe grants us many health benefits. For example, blueberries are often considered a Superfood (or superfruit) because they contain significant amounts of antioxidants, anthocyanins, vitamin C, manganese and dietary fiber.
This term, however, not in common use among all dieticians and nutritional scientists. In fact, a small number of them still dispute the claims made about super foods. Although there are these few detractors who doubt that consuming particular foodstuffs can have a health benefit, study after study continues to demonstrate that there is indeed positive health effects from eating the super foods.
As more and more research is carried out into foods and the nutrients they contain, we are seeing that many of the foods we have been eating for generations, and some that are newer to us, are packed full of vitamins and minerals, and many other nutrients with promising health benefits.
The biggest problem is that most of these foods need to be consumed fresh or frozen, not cooked or processed, in order to gain the health benefits. Since many people living in the modern era have lost a taste for fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, modern diets are severely lacking in healthful benefits.
One of the easiest ways to consume an abundant amount of super foods without having to munch on lettuce all day is to drink at least one green smoothie a day. Green smoothies made with super foods are packed with all the healthy beneifts these power packed whole foods have to offer us.
